New-build transformation garden

A backyard garden with a stone and brick walkway, various plants, shrubs, and trees, a wooden fence, and outdoor chairs on a sunny day.

A design to bring a sense of privacy and movement to a new build garden that had been left with a lawn and nothing else to draw the eye. I added different areas taking advantage of the height differences and connected by small paths to bring some exploration. The planting scheme is relatively low maintenance, with some hardy tropicals as well as hot colours and exotic leaf shapes to evoke memories of travels. Some carefully positioned small trees and shrubs capture the gaze and obscure the neighbouring houses without creating a barrier, and a large water bowl gives a further focus as well as providing a water source for birds and wildlife.

A garden bed with various plants and flowers, bordered by a stone wall, with a house and a blue sky in the background.

A planting plan for some lovely, characterful, existing terraced borders to compliment some existing small trees and shrubs. The beds are in full sun with well-drained soil so I chose plants that will give some year round colour and resistance to drought to suit clients that love to garden, but also have the odd holiday or busy period. A secondary bed was created under the pleached trees in the shadow of a fence, with some pretty foliage and flowers dotted throughout the year. A palette of purples, pinks and touches of yellow was chosen, with some silvery foliage also playing a starring role.

Urban Wildlife garden

Two plant nursery planting lists with images of various flowers and plants.

A full design for a compact urban garden to allow for a space to relax, grow a few fruits and vegetables, and of course tuck the bins and compost out of the way. The planting is chosen to have a calming palette of whites, purples, and blues with a cottage garden feel, and to encourage wildlife. Some gauzy height from plants will enclose the seating area without constricting it. Pots have been used to maximise planting area with some flexibility, and the vertical spaces have been taken advantage of for fan-trained fruit trees and flowering climbers for this plant-loving couple. Wildlife habitats have been snuck into the borders in the form of log piles, a small, part-planted dipping tank fed from the greenhouse gutters and nest boxes, in addition to the pollinator-friendly flowers.
